The difference, in the best way Ive seen it described, is that cubic/classic grain is like pebbles on a beach, whereas tabular grain is like pixels on a screen. Some great shots here, but the man smoking in the bus is just terrific. I get where you are coming from. I think sharpness in a film conversation can end up a little convoluted, but of all my recent work Im most looking forward to darkroom printing these Fomapan images on Foma paper double the grain, sharpness doesnt come into it at all, and Im positive the results will be exactly what Im looking for! Its not a popular developer for some reason but its cheap as chips and delivers a fine grain. schrfe war nie ein Problem. There are several 5 Frames With articles Ive written here on 35mmc which look at some of the results from these different exposure combinations with Fomapan 400. Ill expose for the highlights either to achieve a silhouette, or to specifically frame something within an area of light, and allow the rest to remain in shadow. I quit shooting Fomapan 400 because it was so scratch prone for me.Also, whats your Plustek workflow like Im thinking of ditching silverfast for vuescan, Im hearing vuescan makes for more neutral images because silverfast always wants to employ negafix profiles and rubbish like that (half the films I shoot dont even have a negafix profile). Both of the images below are lower contrast than anything Id ever print, but as you can see, whilst we still have some detail in the shadows on the Kentmere image, our Fomapan has some pretty fine detail right across the image. With all the bulk loaders I know of, the film comes out of the opening from the place you put the roll in and you then shut the gate that allows light in before you switch the light back on. Character is quite a subjective measurement, and different people will assess different qualities when discussing it. You are using an out of date browser. I dont think I have as direct an analogy with Fomapan 400, its more of its own thing. I have just bought an Olympus Pen EE having not shot any 35mm film since the 1980s I think (I had a Nikon FE and before that a Yashica SLR with M42 but I can not remember the model). Review | Kentmere 400 vs. Tri-X vs. HP5 Plus. Id say that Fomapan 400 is fairly low grain, but largegrained very visible, but not bad to my eye. Easy to introduce texture in those areas in a print just by flashing the paper beforehand, if that is something that perticularly worried anyone who doesnt want any areas of pure white on their image. Its a traditional grain and very contrasty. The Kentmere also shows a little halation, but only when the light is very concentrated and higher than a few stops from what Im exposing for. Vor Korn habe ich keine Angst, solange kein 80 Schleifpapier Look entsteht. Not being concerned with grain and underexposure, I didnt mind it. I highly recommend you check it out here. Both films are a solid choice - try both and see which you like better! As I mentioned earlier, the film performs the best when over-exposed by a stop or a little less than a stop, but that shouldnt stop you from shooting it as the box speed of ASA-400. Honestly, if money is that big an object or is the sole criteria, then just steal TMY2 or TriX. I have the feeling that you and I work in a similar style. Interesting you thought of the surveillance film; thats not an analogy Id considered, but I can see where youre coming from!Ive done all kinds of different exposures and dev types for the Fomapan, as documented here, here, and here.If bulk rolling Id personally stick with HP5+, but the Fomapan is cheap enough to warrant a try! Welche Zeiten hast du verwendet? It will also mean that I can make a few comparisons to other, higher end 400 speed films, as they fill roughly the same space. Thank you! Fantastic review!Thank you for sharing these shots and your thoughts and observations. Just out of curiosity, which developer/dilution did you use to process the film? However the overall effect is actually quite muddy, and unpleasing to my eye, whereas the Fomapan in the same condition is undeniably less detailed, but results in a nicer image (in my opinion).if(typeof ez_ad_units!='undefined'){ez_ad_units.push([[336,280],'35mmc_com-box-4','ezslot_11',182,'0','0'])};__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-35mmc_com-box-4-0'); Kentmere 400, exposed for the dappled light. roll of Fomapan 400 and bought a 100ft. I actually like to leave this option on when scanning 120, but I think its too aggressive for Kentmere and leaves the grain looking chunky. Kentmere 400, metered for the mid-tone. [] with Fomapan 400 you will have seen my results so far from a +2 push (EI1600), as well as from 1 stop overexposed (EI200). Personally though, as someone who accepts, even likes grain, and isnt averse to the look that youll get out of both of these films in Rodinol I am definitely thinking that the Fomapan offering will get a few more chances to impress. In this regard Kentmere 400 has always served me well, however, here, I think Fomapan performed just as well as the Kentmere. Fomapan features a more severe cut off, with well exposed images showing pure blacks and pure whites with only a very same-y grey in the middle. I personally enjoy pushing Kentmere and think its forgiving tonal range leads to better images when pushed. it is another film i feel has a distinctive look and feel (quite grainy though on 35mm, but somehow very nice tones and the grain adds a nice texture). The developer shouldnt matter too much for this kind of process, any will do.The scanner I use is a Plustek 8100. Kentmere 400 feels like Tri-X with less dynamic range. However I think there are some quite distinguished features to the grains of these films that should remain constant regardless of the technique used. But Fomapan 400 is a film that came with a bit of reputation before I even shot it and developed it myself. The look of Kentemere reminds me of those surveillance films, or JHC400, so maybe that would be the most direct comparison. Im here a bit late, but I would like to add Rollei RPX. It provides a grittier look than other Kodak films (specifically T-Max 400). Unless I pre-soak and rinse the film before the developer, I do so thoroughly after dumping-off the developer to ensure that none of the vivid green anti-halation dye remains to avoid polluting my stop both with it; with that level of rinse, the stop is probably redundant, but I do it anyway. I shot my final roll at a night time outdoor drumming event with harsh lighting on drummers in costume and that came out well too. Ive seen Fomapan described as having a tabular grain structure, the same as found in Delta, T-Max, and Neopan lines of film, as well as C41. If youre a fan of a particular era of films and love that high-speed crunch and grain that youd find in a 1970s roll of Kodak Tri-X and are okay with a bit of speed loss or an increase of grain plus a bit of soft mush and a mid-to-low contrast than Fomapan 400 might be a film to try. I am presently shooting Fomapan 200 in my 45. Ive shot Tri-X before, but my preference is HP5+! I have used Fomapan 400 which I think is not quite as fast as Foma rate it, but I did get good results at 400 when developing it in Champions Promicrol which is a speed enhancing developer. I decided to give Fomapan 400 a try after discovering that it is exactly the same price as Kentmere 400. While we're discussing the Foma/Arista 400, yes it does seem grainy. I do keep a bottle of Rodinal on hand for slower films (Ferrania P30 or Across 100) but DD-X is my go-to for everything else. The fact that this experimentation was necessary with Fomapan but not with the Kentmere is quite damning in my opinion. I still prefer Tri-X but its a Ariston, if you are bulk loading then both films require loading in the dark so there is no more of a risk with HP5+ than Foma. D-76 is OK. Learn how your comment data is processed. I shot both films at box speed, and didnt experience any issues. Yep, there are many reviews of Foma 400 on the net, and they often say that, shot at box speed and developed as recommended, its grainy, contrasty and lacks shadow detail, which is what pushed film looks like.I shoot a lot of it, all at 200. Thanks! While Fomapan is still about the least expensive 120 film you can get, its price advantage over arguably better films has eroded since I initially wrote this review. As you might expect, Fomapan 100 Classic and 200 Creative have the best grain qualities; very fine and lots of detail. Ich bin immer etwas unsicher welche Entwicklungszeiten ich nehmen soll, da ja nie klar ist um welche Version des Filmes es sich handelt. I am interested in contrast in less than optimal conditions, and the detail were able to pull out of specifically the darker areas of the image. But as is the case of any fickle film, you have to develop it right. Hopefully the results above prove me right. Enter ? Clear editor. Ansel Adams did good tree work. I loaded up my LowePro 400 AW II with my Nikon F100, 12-24mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8, and 85mm f/1.8 one foggy March morning before striking out through the streets of NYC to shoot some film. I never did care for the halation and light piping of Kodak anyway. There really isn't any more of a risk with the more expensive film. Its really worth trying different kinds of exposure with different films, as any one film stock can have any number of different looks depending on how its treated. Whether thats true or not, it is widely known that Arista film (Freestyles house brand) is repackaged Foma; the Holga branded film sold by Freestyle is as well; and, Kosmo Fotos Stephen Dowling has been quite open about his ISO 100 film being Foma too. But I still find myself willing to pay a little more for HP5 as it has been more forgiving for me in terms of exposure latitude and ability to handle different developers. das wird 60er Schleifpapier mit viel Charakter aber ohne Grauwerte. Id like to be able to shoot 400 speed films either dead on as much as possible, and to use the latitude when in tricky situations to go slightly under when necessary. ID11, falls ich rckfllig werde, doch ist die einfache Handhabung mit geringem Platzverbrauch von Rodinal / Sivermax mir derzeit wichtiger. But honestly, Fomapan 400 Action is nearly indistinguishable from the two slower speeds in terms of grain, contrast, and image quality. The recurring points here pretty much nail it: HP5+ is a more consistently quality film that pushes much better. If thats the look youre going for, it may satisfy you, but I personally prefer Ilford Delta 100 for 35mm photography, and in terms of classic style emulsions, I even find that I prefer Kentmere 100 in 35mm to Fomapan. However, dependable old Tri-X 400 at 320 works for me, especially in 120 size. My negatives always look really dull. Thanks for visitingBeyond the Aperture.
